The colored gauge gives a visual representation of how your community is doing in comparison to other communities. The three-colored dial represents the distribution of values from the reporting regions (e.g. counties in the state) ordered from those doing the best to those doing the worst (sometimes lower values are better and in other cases higher values are better). From that distribution, the green represents the top 50th percentile, the yellow represents the 25th to 50th percentile, and the red represents the "worst" quartile.

This gauge shows whether the Region: Tampa Bay value is increasing or decreasing over time. A green arrow means the value is improving and a red arrow means the value is getting worse. The = (equal) sign means that there is not a significant increase or decrease since the last measurement. A blue arrow means the value being higher (or lower) is not necessarily good or bad.

Why can I view maps for some indicators and not all indicators?
The dashboard contains maps for HCI-maintained indicators that show how your community is doing in comparison to other communities (green-yellow-red divided gauge), as shown below:

Maps are available for standard geographies (county, zip code and census tract). Some indicators may not have maps because:

The indicator data is locally-maintained. To identify who maintains the indicator, view the “Maintained By” field on the indicator detail page.
The indicator data is compared to a mean or median value; the gauge does not have distinct divisions, as shown below:
The indicator shows data for a non-standard geography. Custom geographies, such as special regions, service areas or subsets of zip codes, are not mapped.

Why are some values for counties and/or zip codes not available?
Certain values may not be available for a variety of reasons:

HCI only provides the values for counties, zip codes and census tracts where data is available on your site.
When there are only a small number of data values for a zip code or county (e.g., 10 deaths due to heart disease), data values are often not shown due to confidentiality and stability concerns. You will not see this data mapped or on your dashboard.
Zip codes change more often than indicator data is collected and reported. If the zip code at the time of data collection no longer exists, the data will not be mapped.

Why can’t I see zip code level data for all indicators?
Data collection at the zip code level is a resource intensive process; therefore, many data sources do not collect and report data at this level.

What is this Indicator?

This indicator shows the average annual age-adjusted hospitalization rate due to non-hypertensive congestive heart failure (CHF), including rheumatic heart failure per 10,000 population aged 18 years and older.

Why this is important:

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a condition in which the heart can't pump enough blood to the body's other organs. This can result from a variety of conditions including coronary artery disease, diabetes, past heart attack, hypertension, heart infections, diseases of the heart valves or muscle, and congenital heart defects. Because the heart is not able to work efficiently, blood backs up in the tissues causing edema or swelling. Edema can occur in the legs and ankles as well as in the lungs, where it causes shortness of breath, especially while lying down. Around 5 million people in the United States have heart failure, and more than 287,000 people in the United States die each year with the disease. The estimated direct cost for heart failure in the U.S. in 2006 was $29.6 billion. According to the National Hospital Discharge Survey, hospitalizations for heart failure have increased from 402,000 in 1979 to 1,101,000 in 2004.

Technical Note: The distribution is based on data from 67 Florida counties.

Rates were calculated using population figures from the 2010 U.S. Census. Rates based on fewer than 10 hospitalizations are unstable and are not reported. Rates for zip codes with a population of less than 300 are not reported.

Rates by race/ethnicity are for 2010-2011.
