What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the number of motorcyclists killed in traffic collisions.
Why this is important:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motorcycle crashes killed 5,280 people in 2008. The number of motorcycle deaths has increased every year between 1997 and 2008.

Motorcycle deaths and injuries cost over 12 billion dollars per year in medical costs and lost productivity. Motorcycle helmets help reduce the risk of head injury and death, saving approximately 1,800 lives in 2008. The most effective way to prevent motorcycle fatalities are universal helmet laws.
Technical Note:  The trend is a comparison between the most recent and previous measurement periods. Confidence intervals were not taken into account in determining the direction of the trend.
